Borneo Fish / Eel Trap Rattan Ceiling or Wall Light
Borneo Fish / Eel Trap Rattan Ceiling or Wall Light
A unique and distinctive handmade fish or eel trap, crafted using traditional techniques in Borneo. This is an actual fish trap that works on the principle of a fish entering with the current and either lacking the strength to swim out against fast flowing water or lacking the brain calibre to turn round and swim out. In any case, by owning this beautifully crafted and intricate talking point you are almost certainly saving piscine lives!
The Thames near our workshop contains a surfeit of eels, but we feel less than compelled to go and trap them, and so obviously we felt compelled to turn this trap into a stunning light feature.
It can be hung from a hook on a wall or suspended as a pendant from a ceiling rose, or used as a table or shelf light. It's accidently a very versatile thing. It's also quite beautiful with the diffused light it emits through the fine rattan caning.
Converted with a brass B22 bayonet lamp holder and 1.5 m of old gold braided cable, it's a simple and sympathetic conversion that doesn't undermine or detract from the beauty of the object in any way.
The trap itself measures 37 cm in length
